The only area that is REALLY hard is DoA in HM. NM is not that bad, except maybe for Gloom (at cave), and can EASILY be hero henched with 2 players + 6 heroes.

DoA HM aside, for pure taste of 'insane-ness', go out of the portal in Gate of Fear and you will see groups of 6-8 Terrors (water eles). A pretty interesting setup.

That aside, the hardest area for vanquishing I found was Eastern Frontier in Tyria. I know a lot of people say Joko's domain is tough, but it is really not that bad if you think reasonably, drop your MM/SS/Rit healer just for once, and take 3 Shield of Judgment smiters with you. I have vanquished Joko, Shards of Orr in NM/HM and CoF HM, and I never dropped a sweat doing them.

People need to get out of the mentality of the 3-necro owning everything. Once you apply your brains to it and learn the enemies, you are liikely to perform much better.

Gate of Madness in HM (pre-EotN) will remain the most memorable mission of all time because I pugged it and got it done clean and fair, with 1 person going AFK. While capping the shrines, shiro killed all but a rit who eventually ressed us all and we eventually got masters. It was a really scary night.

Ursanway + 2 HB is an option for those who want it quick and do not want to bother applying themselves in the vanquishing process. You may get the same results and it may make you feel uber and what not, but the joy in truly vanquishing an area with counter-builds is the funnest part of all (gold and xp aside ) - at least for me.

When I am playing with my Heroes in HM most areas are hard IMO, because the H/H are Dumb, but when I am playing with my Guild GW is Easy Any mode/any Area, real humans (Smart humans that can play GW) are 10000000 times better than Dumb H/H.

Hardest area... I'd say DoA. The Stygian quest, on HM, being quite difficult when I played it. Halfway through the quest, there were three healers and three ursans. We managed to finish it up, though. I imagine it to be much more difficult without Ursan...

So far, I've found only a small number of areas so unforgiving, so heinous . . . that I will NEVER set foot in them again without being at least partly drunk to numb me. These are the areas I DREAD to need to return to for whatever reason.

Prophecies
- Dreadnought's Drift: Dense, dense place. Very easy to overpull the Summit, very easy to get into an endless death loop. (Similarly, there are a couple spots in the Southern Shiverpeaks where monster groups are camped on top of res shrines; the lag of a full-team resurrection almost ensures I wake to another "Waiting for resurrection" prompt.

- Frozen Forest, first time entering from Icedome: Never, NEVER again.

- Majesty's Rest, going after Rotscale: Yeah, if this didn't have the invisible poison traps I'd feel a lot better about it. Even so, I haven't quite found an EASY way of doing this. If you are not after this guy, the area is NOT a problem.

- Grenth's Footprint, Hard Mode: Okay, it's already exceedingly easy to accidentally trigger two groups of Summit. Hard Mode rubs salt into the wounds.

Cantha

I haven't finished Cantha yet, but Vizunah Square, going for Master's? T. Temple I missed Master's reward because the stupid end would NOT TRIGGER for a full minute.

Elona

I haven't finished Elona either, and have not found things which were more than a little annoying to do. The Kournan Fortresses mentioned earlier are a pain, but not insurmountable.

Eye of the North

- The pathing programs in the dungeons don't seem properly adjusted; NPCs, Heroes and Henchmen all tend to get stuck on pieces of geology which don't seem to warrant it. Enemies seem to walk right through those spots.

- Shards of Orr: I abandoned this and gave it up. I can't seem to overcome huge groups with two healers and lots of nasty AoE damage being dumped rapidly.

- Sparkfly Swamp: Raptors out of nowhere. They upgraded from "annoyance" to "immense headache" the fifth time they came running full tilt from off radar straight at us. Couple this with Angorodons or that darned "Lord of the Marsh" and continuous wipes have happened. I dunno, I posted before about a monster dealing a 340 damage hit without a skill I could see in use? That was this area.

- Ice Cliff Chasms, first time entering: The only way through that path and Mountain Pinesouls is to run and leave the dead behind. The monsters are significantly too dense in that little area, FROM THAT DIRECTION.

- Sacnoth Valley, burning forest. Things in there are a little TOO happy about patrolling at full-tilt-runs and a little too dense to avoid double-pulls.

Beyond this, I don't have MANY complaints. I recognized I just simply don't have well-balanced methods, and trying something a different way MIGHT make some places easier. So would playing with actual human beings who weren't pick-up-groups

The Captured Son in Factions NM is painful for new players. The mobs are huge.
Agreed on the Shiverpeaks where you come out of Iron Mines I think it is to find a huge mob of ice imps waiting to slow you and throw Maelstroms all over the place. H/H AI is too stupid to realize, "Hey, I'm in the middle of an AoE spike. Better move."

anything with lots of monster-only skills, lots of environmental effects and foes that are at least 8 levels above your own.

Or at least that's what Anet thinks that makes PvE "hard".

Well i'm completely done vanquishing on every map, and none of them were hard. The only thing i would say was hard would be vloxen excavations, pugging it and them not know how to kill monks first might have been a big part of why

Stop using PvE skills (especially Ursan) and consumables if you haven't already.
Have you: (in HM)
1. Killed Rotscale?
2. Done the Titan quests?
3. Done the above with 4 party members?
4. Considered playing PvP?

The hardest ares is the area with 7 REAL players in your group + you of course. NO MAPPING OUT!

Geesh. Try this and see if you can do the last mission in prof. NO URSAN. PROF SKILLS ONLY Gd'luck.

See you in a week or two.

I bet that you can not even make such a group.

From Kereminde

Well the problem herein lies the fact that most players do not have the ability to understand how to play the game as a unit. They want strong skills and fast results. They run in and agro - if they know what that is anymore - and then expect the monk with 0 energy to heal them..NOW! Does not work that way. So playing with humans is a crap shoot.

My fav memory is of the Dragon's Layer and killing Glint. IF you are not in a strong team of Real Players forget it. After we completed the mission I can remember running around DF Yelling and screaming in local chat for at least 10 minutes with the team. Some of which are still on my friends list.
